Description

Corrosion resistance
The general level of Type 201's corrosion resistance is comparable to Type 301's. In the majority of mild situations, Type 201 ought should function satisfactorily in place of Type 301. Type 201 has a lower scaling resistance than Type 301. Type 201 is about 50 °F (28 °C) less resistant to destructive scaling than Type 301 up to around 1500 °F (816 °C).

Fabrication
Similar to Type 301, Type 201 stainless steel can be formed through bench forming, roll forming, and brake bending. But because of its greater strength, it might have more springback. In most cases, this material can be drawn identically to Type 301

if more power is applied and the hold-down pressure is raised, drawing activities.

Weldability
The standard fusion and resistance welding processes are widely thought to be capable of joining stainless steels in the austenitic class. By ensuring that ferrite forms in the weld deposit, special care must be taken to prevent weld "hot cracking". The weld heat affected zone may become sensitive and vulnerable to intergranular corrosion in some situations, just like with other chrome-nickel austenitic stainless steel grades where carbon is not controlled to 0.03% or less. Compared to the Type 304L Stainless Steel, which is the most popular alloy in this stainless class, this particular alloy is typically thought to have worse weldability. The most frequent specification for AWS E/ER 308 is when a weld filler is required. More details can be found in the reference literature, which is well-known for Type 201 Stainless Steel.

Heat treatment
Type 201 is not hardenable by heat treatment. Annealing: Anneal at 1850 – 1950 °F (1010 – 1066 °C), then water quench or rapidly air cool. The annealing temperature should be kept as low as possible, consistent with the desired properties, because Type 201 tends to scale more than Type 301
