What is the difference between 316 and 304 stainless steel sheet?

In the stainless steel material market, 316 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel are two widely used materials. Although they both belong to the category of stainless steel, there are significant differences in composition, performance, application and price.

Composition Difference

First of all, from the chemical composition point of view, 316 stainless steel adds Mo (molybdenum) element on the basis of 304 stainless steel. This element has a significant improvement effect on the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of stainless steel. Specifically, the Mo content of 316 stainless steel is generally around 2%-3%, while the Mo content of 304 stainless steel is almost zero. In addition, the nickel content of 316 stainless steel is also slightly higher than that of 304 stainless steel, which further enhances its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Performance Difference

Due to the presence of Mo element, 316 stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion by corrosive media such as chlorides, acids, alkalis and salts under high temperature environments. This makes 316 stainless steel particularly suitable for marine, chemical, medical and other fields, which often have high requirements for the corrosion resistance of materials. In contrast, although 304 stainless steel also has good corrosion resistance, it performs slightly worse in chloride-containing environments, so it is more suitable for general construction, decoration, food and other fields.

Application fields

In terms of application fields, since 316 stainless steel has stronger corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, it is often used to make equipment and components that require high corrosion resistance, such as seawater treatment equipment, chemical equipment, medical equipment, etc. 304 stainless steel is widely used in home decoration, food processing, electrical appliance production and other fields because of its relatively cheap price and moderate performance. For example, many of the cooking pots, stainless steel tableware, stainless steel countertops, etc. that we use daily are made of 304 stainless steel.

Price difference

In terms of price, since 316 stainless steel contains the more expensive Mo element, its market price is naturally higher than that of 304 stainless steel. Generally speaking, the price of 316 stainless steel is more than 20,000 yuan per ton, while the price of 304 stainless steel is between 15,000 yuan and 20,000 yuan per ton. This price difference also reflects the difference in performance and application fields between the two materials.

Physical and Mechanical Properties

From the perspective of physical and mechanical properties, both 316 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel have high yield strength and tensile strength, as well as good ductility. This means that they can both withstand large loads and deformations, and are suitable for making various structural parts and components. However, due to the addition of Mo elements to 316 stainless steel, its strength and heat resistance are relatively high, and it has better fatigue resistance.

Low-carbon version

In addition to the standard 316 and 304 stainless steels, there are also low-carbon versions of 316L and 304L stainless steels. These low-carbon materials can reduce the risk of intergranular corrosion and improve welding performance and corrosion resistance. Therefore, in projects that require welding or use under high temperature conditions, it is more appropriate to choose a low-carbon version of stainless steel.

Conclusion

There are significant differences between 316 stainless steel and 304 stainless steel in terms of composition, performance, application, and price. When choosing stainless steel materials, the most suitable material should be determined based on the specific use environment and needs. For application scenarios that require high corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, such as marine environments, chemical equipment, and medical devices, 316 stainless steel is a better choice; while for general construction, decoration, and food fields, 304 stainless steel is widely used for its moderate price and good performance.
